Kabhi Kabhi….A Classic?
Saw Kabhi Kabhi today for the first time. Unbelievable isn’t it? I was so accustomed to all the songs of the film that I just assumed that I had seen the movie and for some reason, I always confused it with Silsila. My confusion is justified! I mean think about it….when my kids grow up and they watch DDLJ, KKHH, K3G….I swear to god they will be confused among all those movies, what with Shahrukh and Kajol in all of them. I can so see that happening
Anyways back to the movie. A classic in its time, a superhit! We all love the songs and music and the characters and the performances! I do too Loved it but honestly, couldn’t help laughing at all the criss cross of lovers. A very complicated look at relationships. Each one with its own past. I couldn’t help but laugh at how AB and Rakhee had a history and then Rakhee was married to SK, and then AB to Waheeda Rahman. To top that, Waheeda Rahman has a child from a previous relationship and for some time I was wondering if Rishi Kapoor would turn out to be Rakhees and ABs son and that she hid the fact from everyone. Then there was the rambunctious daughter of AB and WR! Phew! For a simple brain like mine, all this criss cross in relationships and pasts, and qurbaanis can get a little too overwhelming.
Rakhee was the ideal lover, daughter, wife, and mother. The ideal lover, very beautiful, loving, the one who sings her lovers song at her wedding night, the ideal daughter who marries another man to keep her parents happy, the ideal wife who forgets all things good from the past and loves her husband unconditionally providing him with all his needs and love, and the ideal mother who brings her son up with all love and care and worries about him all the time. If that was not enough, she also turns out to be ideal in her now lost relationship with AB. She tells him to “remember her but think of her happily”.
Then there is the ideal husband and father Shashi Kapoor who even when he finds out about his wife’s past relationships salutes the sacrifices they have made.
Then there is our dear AB! He hates his wife for hiding her past relationship and her “paap” with the man she was betrothed to who died and it was no fault of hers. She did what was right and forgot about it ofcourse not telling her husband about it. Her husband however is really pissed off at her and is disgusted that she has a daughter from before whilst he still loves his old love away. He apparently feels “betrayed” by his wife for not telling him but does not feel he did anythign wrong by not giving his wife the love that she deserved. Male chauvinist pig I say.
The wife, demure old lady that she is, is heartbroken and decides to leave the house.
Then there are the three children, the guy who is totally spoiled by his father and crazy about this other girl, this girl who is confused and wants to see her real mother, and this other crazy girl who wants everything.
Towards the end there is this wild goose chase after this goose who has gone wild because she saw the guy she loved in the arms of another woman and because her father slapped her, the obnoxious child that she is! Two horses chased by a car which is in turn chased by a man on his bike while there is dynamite exploding all over the place. To make things better, one of dynamites creates fire instead of just sand all around and that fire lights a twig which in turn lights a forest on fire. They all go in the fire following that stupid girl who after this HOUR long chase starts crying and miraculously becomes a very understanding girl and hugs her now “sister”. When Rishi Kapoor and “her” are in the woods, the understanding horses run outside only to be brought back in by AB and SK. AB brings rishi and his daughter out and SK brings his future daughter in law out.
After this chase, AB suddenly remembers he has a wife that he needs to love desperately. He again rushes to his house and lo and behold, the wife that he had forgotten to love all these years is all of a sudden the love of his life that he cannot live without. In the end the two old lovers are family friends and the two crazy kids get married and the obnoxious little girl is happy smiling showering flowers at them.
My favourite characters were the doctor and his wife Simi Garewal! They brought this girl up, gave her all the love and in the end told her what the truth was and then got her married.
Nice parents they were.
OKay okay those raring to have a go…I said I loved the movie..but wondered what I would have written if I hadnt liked it..so this came out
You saw Kabhi Kabhi now? Tsk tsk. LOL@ DDLJ,KKHH,K3G comment - ya i guess so.
Actually, that was indeed a very funny take on the film. But I think the film was made less as a film but was more like reading a novel - just notice the characterisations, the intricacies, not a very definitive storyline…
Did you notice Yash Chopra’s obsession with plane crashes during that time? Silsila had one in the end. In Kabhi Kabhi Waheeda’s lover died in one. There was a crash in Vijay as well, and of course, not a crash, but an accident in Lamhe ?
AB and WR’s daughter - LOL - yeah she was one spoilt brat indeed - ‘yeh meri kursi pe kyun baithi hai ‘ he he he
True, the ending was weak and rushed up , just like in Silsila
But overall, the film was a classic because of the wonderful interplay of characters and the dialogues.
And of course, who can forget the absolute marvellous music?
My fav dialogue? AB says - ‘bechari ladkiyan, photo kisi ka rakhti hai, pyaar kisi aur se, aur shaadi kisi teesri se…’
My fav scene? When Rishi gets a call from Neetu and Shashi is trying to overhear the convo ha ha ha
Waise, sahi likha hai toone - ha ha … ekdum phunny bana dee phillum…
i dont think ive seen Kabhi Kabhi… well but this is my excuse.., im not much of a movie person! lol
Leaving my stamp. Phir “kabhi” aaunga…;)
so finally new post up. and yea even i am surprised that u watched kabhi kabhi now.
and as far as commenting about the movie is concerned. DJ has done all the honors. mere liye kuch choda hi nahin…*tsk tsk*
The most comic movie review ive ever come across… and that too for a movie like Kabhi Kabhi…?
Well, that also reminds me, that was one of the things on my to do list once upon a time… only that that list does not exist anymore, the tasks still do…
Waise, great day to post this - Its Yash Chopra’s Birthday on 27th September
Did u notice one thing - and I dunno if this is deliberate, or just happened - but in the end, former lovers AB and Rakhee become samdhis. Does that ring a bell? No? Remember, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and the small sub-plot weaved in a dialogue between Alok Nath-Reema-Anupam Kher
nice post-mortem of the movie…! i never knew the movie was complicated…
Kabhi Kabhi??? Duh! U better see “The Lord Of The Rings : The Fellowship Of The Ring”… I bet u’ll like it!!!
Because I havent seen Kabhi Kabhi either!!! And neither Silsilay. But those their songs.
I remember that my elder sis - she never liked to hear the song Kabhi kabhi - because it kinda signified that you dont get your first love, and get forced to marry someone else!!
Wierd..!!! I dunno if i have been able to explain it properly…….
hmm…. even I’ve nt seen this movie yet..
but, ur description of the movie was really funny…. hahaaa.. sooo many characterizations and at one time even I was confused of what was happening, while reading ur post..
Muaaaaahhh!!! Lakh rupaye ki baat kahin. The previous post on long distance. This is a comment for the previous post. Guess what, True love is felt only during ur teens. I just realised, to love without abandon. to be able to do anything for love, and we tell kids that its Crush/infatuation. I only realised.. well just now as i was reading ur post that What we felt as pimply teens was what true love might be. As we grow older we fell all the more confused about Love. My then Girlfren once wrote to me, when i had just finished school..late teens, that she realised how much she loved me only at the times of the parting and whenn i had gone so far away.. but then we were far away only physically. Love is in the mind even if not in the heart… Well our long distance love couldn’t last 2 more years( i couldn’t miss the opportunities)…..but i remembered those days when i read ur posts.. ALL THE BEST PAL!!!
Ive go to sit down and watch this movie once again. I seem to have forgotten a lot of it, but the songs are pretty haunting. Those are not easily forgotten. Very kaush-style post-mortem though!
havent seen the movie……
and that was berry phunny!:-D
Divs
y no replies as yet????
btw finally bought the orignial pirated (hehe.. pirated, but without any snips and chops - the full 3 CD set) Kabhi Kabhi VCD
Saw it long back. Indeed, a nice movie but I was not able to get the significance of some of the characters n scenes. The poor me!!!
yea DEEPAK, whats up with Yash Chopra’s obsession with plane crashes…depressed soul was he then? and yea the climax was rushed up but I think what held the film through was the music, star cast, direction, locales and performances…the thing that was missing was a good story and a good plot..okay maybe it woulda worked in that time but not in todays time… and LOL that dialogue was indeed good and that scene with Rishi and Shashi was great! i thought it was a little tooo cheesy…but nice nevertheless
and hey! didnt know it was his budday today…woulda written up nicer things hehe..and yes! that plot ….hmmm sooraj barjatya stole it or wat???
yes i know GNEXTDOOR—-you wont like it anyway…

koi nahi - der aaye durust aaye! Just 1 comment on the “Angrezi in Mumbai” post: Main to yahaan US mein bhi baahar gaya to desi shop owners and salespeople se hindi mein baat karta hoon! They are more than happy to respond in Hindi. It’s just considered hip to converse in hindi in Mumbai. For all those people, I have a few precious words “Ghosts of the kicks not listening to the talks”!:P To kya hua agar mujhe angrezi nahi aatee :)))
