I have been blogging for over a year now, and have blogged about every topic under the sun about this mundane chagrin called life. What I have mostly refrained from writing about is my personal opinions on politics, government and the works. Maybe I deemed myself too unintelligent to have an opinion of my own, or maybe I was a little too afraid to voice my stand for fear of criticism and having to defend my own views. I was maybe a little wary of this world of blogs for reasons I was not sure of.
Today, on one of my blog hopping sprees, I came across two very different and very interesting blogs.
I found the first link on Vidhi’s blog about brutalities on a non-suspecting law-abiding citizen in Bangalore. Nimish Adani writes that he was brutally beaten by railway officials in Bangalore as part of a heist by a group of people to make easy money off unsuspecting individuals. Read all about it here. Abuse of power does not come as a surprise to many of us who are aware of the corruption and politics that usually goes hand in hand with a government job. However, seldom are such abuses publicized, even less, blogged about. Adani had the courage to stand up for justice and the patience to do the rounds of dozens of offices before he was taken seriously. He had the network through which he sent out emails to everyone regarding his situation hoping to get media attention which would definitely speed up the process. He even blogged about it. In no time, he was being backed by a network of supporters from all around the globe. The media got a hang of it, forcing government officials to take immediate action. I commend Adani’s patience and courage.
Unfortunately, not everyone is as courageous, patient, or has as much will to stand up for justice against a system that does not make being at the recieveing end of justice any easy. The email messages Adani sent out played a major part in building a support group through which he did get in touch with several media personnel to highlight his plight and fight for justice.
Abuse of power calls for another post another day. Here, I am pondering over how effective and powerful cyberspace can be in our world today.
Another development that has had a powerful impact in blogsville recently is the controversy over IIPM’s advertising and supposed false claims about the institutions credentials. All I had to do was stumble upon the links at Sadik’s and Clueless‘s blog and voila, I was reading through and devouring page after page and comment after comment of this hullaballoo.
Here is a synopsis: Gaurav Sabnis linked an article by a magazine JAM evaluating IIPnM, its claims, and its credibility. Sabnis blogged about his personal opinion on what he thought about IIPnM. Apparently, IIPnM did not take that very kindly and issued him a “legal notice” via email of a possible lawsuit of Rs 125 crore and several conditions along with it. The situation gets even more interesting with Sabnis’s employer IBM being dragged into this. Sabnis resigned from his job because he wanted to stand by his principles.
Now, why do I care? Why did I sweat over this piece of controversy when I could have easily refrained from posting about it? Honestly, I could care less about what IIPnM claims or advertises because really, I was not aware that an IIPnM existed, or that there was a magazine JAM, or a blogger Gaurav Sabnis before I stumbled upon umpteen posts and blogs about this isssue.
What I do know is that Sabnis is a blogger. Everyone reading this right now is a blogger and has blogged about all and sundry, each voicing his/her opinion. Are we now supposed to shy away from what we think is right and wrong? Can I as a blogger be sued for criticizing an institution that I do not believe in? As a blogger, am I not entitled to my own personal point of view and freedom of speech? Lets say I am terribly upset about how a certain company’s government handles its affairs and I decide to blog about. Should I then be on my toes waiting for a legal notice to arrive from the government? Really, is it now illegal to articulate in words what I really think about something or someone on a blog? It is one thing to publish false stories as facts and another to publish one’s own opinions and views,
A blog by definition is anything from an online journal to a reflection of the bloggers personality and views.
I remember the recent volley of arguments and disagreements over the right choice for the Indian entry at the Oscars at Ashtrix’s blog. A lot of us frivolously voiced our likes and dislikes between Black and Paheli. Do we now need to be waiting for a notice from SLB or Amol Palekar for saying we did not like their movies or that we think they shouldn’t be the official entry to the Oscars?
What is even more disturbing is the way the institute handled this. The worst thing an educational institution can do is get caught in this kind of negative publicity. Rashmi Bansal (editor of JAM)’s blog has been inundated with lewd comments from supposed IIPM students and alumni. Now, I cannot comment on the veracity of IIPnM’s claims, and I may be biased towards the bloggers, but I do know that truth does not need justifications. If IIPnM is truly what it claims to be, why does it not come out in the open and really show the world what it is. Why did it not invite Gaurav Sabnis to its campus so that they could clear his misunderstanding if they thought he had any? I am sure Sabnis would have been happy to visit and re-comment and possibly revise his thoughts had there been anything different to say about IIPnM. Could this be how supposedly established institutions handle criticism?
As for my take on this, I think it takes a man of courage to quit his job in order to stand by his principles. The actual facts maybe completely skewed from my perception of the situation, and my knowledge of the story is only one-sided here. But I do know that if someone has an opinion about something, the person is fully entitled to it.
In my opinion, that is freedom of thought and speech.
Sabnis is also being backed by a huge network of friends, bloggers, and supporters. Updates on this at Desipundit.
Me First!!
Well, no comments on this. I hv a few reserved views that I dont think will find favors. In any fight, not only one side is always the complete truth is my opinion. So let’s leave it at that.
I got a FWDed email talking about this.. I murmured.. “kuch nahi ho sakta is desh kaa” and I just ignored it..
hey will read it later
take care
You won’t believe but I was ignorant about the IIPM episode until a couple of days back when I happened to bump into a friend’s blog which had a link to Rashmi’s page! It indeed was shameful of the (so called) IIPM students to comment on Rashmi’s blog in one of the filthiest way I have ever seen. It was more of personal attack on Rashmi with vulgar abuses and cheap remarks. I have personally read these remarks on Rashmi’s blog.
As you rightly pointed out, freedom of speech and freedom for journalism is what constitution of this country has awarded to every citizen of our country so question of any legal implications doesn’t arise at all. Secondly, if IIPM thought that what was written on the blog was biased in some way, there could have been a better way of settling the matter. Also there was a wave of suspicion on credentials of the head of the institute. He earned his masters and PhD at his own institute! Sounds like a Munnabhai kind of effort eh? Open a college for yourself and top the charts the way you want. :p
All I say is this was one of the most shameful way of managing ‘crisis’ and guess what they teach ‘management’ to their own students! Ahem!
Yea, you are right about a certain fear that some Bloggers have about writing anything against the Indian Govt. or politians for the fear of prosecution. Forget about Blogging, when a TIME magazine editor wrote a small piece about how Atal Bihari drinks every night and sleeps in most of his meetings, even he was detained by Police while trying to goto US. Freedom of speech is just a a farce in India.
I am not sure about this incident though. I haven’t read much about it except at your blog and don’t have much time to read in detail. Also, since the school itself has’nt wrote a word about it, the story will be one sided like you said.
Although, I am a big supporter of freedom of speech, I think there should always be some limits esp. when it comes to legal cases which are ongoing in courts…
wow… i had seen the links at sadik’s and clueless’ blogs.. but didnt really bother to check it out.. lack of time nad lack of interest being the reasons.. i just like to stay away from all hte ‘juicy’ stuff
but now..this i think is absolutely ridiculous… i looked at a couple of the links and yeah i agree with what u said.. freedom of speech.. i say what i want, when i want, how i want.. no one should come suing me abt it..
fair? no. right? absolutely not.
i dont get why this whole thing by iimp or whatever if blown so out of proportion. i havnt done all the reading and everything.. but im sure cant be that bad!?!?!
ahh i fail to understand…
Every Blogger, and for that matter every citizen born in a free country has the right to express his opinion, and no doubts about it.
It is the comman man’s inherent lack of interest in civil and governance matters that allows the ‘government servants’ to keep believing that they hold control over things, and come what may, they will be able to save themselves from the repurcussions of any of their misdeeds, however henious they may be…
Not only does the system need to get in proper place, but an active participation is required from the common 9-6-concerned-with-himself-earning-for-a-good-life-doesn’t-care-whatsoever-happens-to-the-world-around, and also think about these issues, coz someday or the other, they ARE going to interefere with his primary intentions of living a good life…
did you also happen to visit neha vishwanathan’s blog during your recent net surfing?
atta girl..!!
the hoax run under the guise of imparting education is quite common in india.. but what makes it ridiculous is the way they are going about defending themselves..
their way of reacting to gaurav’s [post was absolutely unforgivable and gauravs’ resignation has just added fuel to the fire..
the best part is this is now not just limited to blogs..
this was published in one of mumbais’ prominent newspapers today.. looks like its gaining momentum..
n hey, thanz for adding Me.. up here..
been there. done that. LOL….
very interesting battle
True DEEPAK, not only one side is the only truth but if the institute in fact did all that several bloggers say it has done, then I am afraid it has not handled it well. Also, the issue is not whether the institution is good or bad, I could care less about cases and legal notices to someone. It is about what bloggers write and if they have any rights and if there any regulations?
Chintan, tis true that we are a tolerant lot on a whole which is in fact a good thing. However, there are etimes when we do in to stand up for ourselves. The other thing is that the system as a whole is so messed up that people in power think that they own everything. We are too blinded by money and corruption too. tis true we need to get out there and take charge.
will wait NEETIE
Hey FUNDOO–yea I did read the comments on Rashmi’s blog. However, I doubt they are IIPM students.. they are probably just crooks hired by the so called legal team to make these comments. And really as many bloggers have pointed out, are they praising IIPM in any of the comments? They are attacking Rashmi. If they thought their institute was that great, they could be well off by writing comments good things about their institute and not attacking Rashmi. And if in FACT they were actual students, then I pity them and their institution. Lord bless them all!
Hey RICKY—you got the gold this time! Did not know about the TIME mag editor. Freedom if speech is a farce to some extent in india. I mmean we do have a free press and the things the press exposes are things that people would be hanged for in some countries even today. However, a lot of people in India are sold out. Freedom of speech is deemed a farce when it comes to huge corporations which have power and money. In those cases, even lawyers, judges and the system is bought and workded around. its sad reallly but it cannot b e changed unless people themselves do somehting about it. As far the story is concerned, those who have not been or actually seen the institute will never know if their claims are in fact real. However, I do believe that Sabnis said what hhe thought and IIPM s reaction was rather childish.
hey GNEXTDOOR—when it comess to laws and rules and freedom of speech people will go all around thigns to prove certain things. this issue has blown out of proportion coz i guess the guy quit his job. IIPM apparently threatened his employer IBM to burn their laptops in front of their Delhi office if the guy did not delete his posts. Now this is what his blog says and nothign has been “verified” by me i guess, but if that is the case then the institute has stooped real low. In any case, sabnis said what he wanted to…whats the big deal..why the legal notices and threats. Its all really beyond me!
what you say is very true ITNL…unless the common man doesnt take charge of his own life and interfere and dare to make way for him, its not going to change. Just because government employees have connections and are in power doesnt mean they abuse it. If one is a victim of injustice, one has to fight for it. and no I have not read Neha Vishwanathan’s blog. Shall do so. Anything particular there?
hey SHREYAS–yep definitely his resignation has added fuel to the fire. Why drag the employer in between? Its not like sabnis said it was IBM that made him write all this did he? Besides, the whole handling of the situation has made thousands of sparks fly! I mean threatening to burn laptops? How low can it get? and no worries! read your blog and then keptreading about this controversy! seems like them bloggers are fighting this one out!
Did you know about this one blogger Mediaah who quit blogging at his blog due to a similar issue? I dont know much about it…but it wasnt as big as this!
VICKY-–been there done that? haha matlab beeen there and read it alll? and indeed its a very interesting battle allright. Will be even more interesting to know the fate of both the blogger and the institute!
How do we know that what was done was done by IIPM? How do we know that the email sent to Gaurav was not a prank by one of IIPMs students? I have never heard someone being sent legal notice through email. It is not even acceptable in the court of law. Untill, Gaurav receives a legal notice by snail mail with signatures and stamps of “Authorities”, only then will it termed be legal.
There is a good chance that higher authorities in IIPM may not have knowledge about all this.
How do we know that Gaurav didn’t resigned because of personal reasons? Anything can happen in online world. How do we know it’s not just a publicity stunt?
These are some reasons why I don’t think we can take side of one party without hearing from the other…
Disclaimer: I haven’t read the whole story but my comments are based on my limited knowledge through your and Clueless’s Blog. {Don’t sue me…he he}
Freedom of Speech is directly propotional to “Power” in India. Atleast China tells its people what they can’t do. (I am not endorsing human rights of China in any way) In India, they use the power without telling people the consequence. Although, US also doesn’t have a good record of it either. Most democracies are afraid of “Freedom of Speech” although they tend to use this against countries like Iran and China…
I guess very soon we’ll all see new rules in the blogs world abt what to write and what not to write in the blogs..
Hi Kaush! am perhaps a bit late in reading the post. Really really strange…how can anyone be sued for writing something on their blog. Based on what u have written, its really like taking our freedom of speech away. But I do wonder what will the Indian Judicial system have to say, this is probably the first case of its kind in India.
RICKY– sure we dont know what was done was done by IIPM and that sabnis could be auuthentic. However, if all this was a hoax …people wouldnt be going all out to make their points. Anyways….we know what we read and while I cannot actually believe all of it,I can atleast deduce some from all this going on and form and opinion. and agreed with what you say about gfreedom of speech except that it is not always the case.
yea PRASAD>…i think so too! I wonder if IIPM has threatened blogspot to come out with a set of rules?!
MEHUL.…looks like it for right now! However like RICKY pointed out, it was an email notice so it might not evenbe legally legal!!! Sigh. Lets see if this goes anywehere at all!
